ST. JOHN | When Anthony Fushi was a freshman, he was tossing batting practice at Lake Central and thought he'd step out from behind the L-net that protects a pitcher throwing so close to a batter.  He caught a baseball in the side of his head, and the rest that he remembers is waking up, his parents taking him to the hospital and spending two nights with nurses checking him every hour for signs of concussion.

Fushi doesn't throw much batting practice now, but the concussion didn't halt his coordination. The senior earned his spot as the Indians' starting third baseman thanks to his defensive dexterity at the position.  "It's more important to have a defensive person there at third base," L.C. coach Jeff Sandor said. "He's a quiet kid who has become more excited since this postseason started. ... He's such a darn good athlete. He's 6-foot-3, 160 pounds, and he's long and throws so well and makes plays."

Lake Central earns first trip to baseball title game
BY HILLARY SMITH

Ryan Pachowicz has been key for Lake Central on two-out clutch hits during his entire senior baseball season. With the bases loaded in the top of the ninth Saturday, Pachowicz didn't even have to take the bat off of his shoulders to give the Indians the 4-3 Class 4A semistate win over Zionsville. Pachowicz was hit by a pitch, driving in Nick Kellams with the winning run.

Lake Central will face Roncalli in the Indians first-ever state championship game appearance.
